Client Case Study: Flexibility Service Provided to ESB Networks

Lets look at a recent Client case study, where a mid size Business Energy User had the ability to shift or reduce load at peak times, enabled by flexible operations.

Flexible load could be an individual site resource or mix of battery, machining, refrigeration, dehumidifiers, heat pump, HVAC, etc.

With their interval meter data, our system analysed and established a baseline from a recent time period. With understanding of their Operations, next we considered and recommended what actions they could take to reduce net electricity demand at peak times. Jointly we determined what made sense before taking part in any initiative.

Low Client Risk - There is always an opt out option and there are no penalties involved for non performance. This is all upside our Client and Triple Edge Energy makes this as frictionless as possible by handling all the details with the System Operator (ESB Networks).

The monetary benefits established are based on current market initiative by ESB Networks and their Beat the Peak Business Programme.

During weekday event windows, we established our Clients baseline to be 150kW of power demand. Through engagement and consultation we worked out a flexible capacity of 25kW, where there could be a reduction in electricity demand to 125kW during the service window (4:30 pm – 7 pm). Our Client is then paid (150kW - 125kW) x €0.68/kWh x 2.5 hours = €42.50 for that event. Where there is peak demand for this service, the rate can go up to €0.82/kWh.

Understanding our Clients site operational requirements, we estimate they would be available for approximately 200 daily events per year. Conservatively applying the minimum rate payment, this results in €42.5/event x 200 events/year = €8,500 per year additional revenue opportunity.

This is one initiative that we are acting as a Service Provider for, but there are other routes to market that Triple Edge Energy is investigating.
